A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

Batesville Intermediate School is a 4-5 school with an enrollment of 272 students (138 boys and 134 girls).  There are 126 students in the fifth grade and 145 students in the fourth grade. There are currently six fourth grade classes, six fifth grade classes, and three special education classrooms which service students with learning disabilities, mild disabilities, moderate disabilities, and emotional disabilities. Students also have the opportunity to attend art, music, physical education, library, and developmental counseling classes each week.

Batesville Intermediate School is located on the west side of Batesville, adjacent to the Batesville Middle School campus.  The facility was originally erected in 1957 as Westwood Elementary (1-8).  In 1991, it underwent several renovations and additions to become Batesville Intermediate School.  Due to an increase in enrollment, an addition of six classrooms, an administrative area, and clinic were added in 1999.

Nine classified personnel and twenty-one certified teachers including a part-time music teacher, a part-time art teacher, three part-time media specialist, and a part-time physical education teacher serve our school.  In addition, Batesville Intermediate School shares a nurse, speech and hearing clinician, gifted and talented coordinator, counselors’ services, ESL teacher and a technology instructional specialist with the other schools in the district. The services of the special education consultants from our Ripley-Ohio-Dearborn Special Education Cooperative are also utilized across the corporation.

Batesville Intermediate School uses the Indiana State Standards in language arts, math, science, and social studies as the core of our curriculum.  Each teacher and student are given copies of these expectations and copies are housed in the main office and the media center for public view.    Each curricular area has a BCSC corporation curriculum guide that has been revised to align with current state standards.  Parents are also given grade level curriculum guides at the beginning of the school year for a convenient reference.

Over ten years ago our corporation, with the assistance of Hillenbrand Industries, began looking to the future of technology.  Over an eighteen-month period, businesses, parents, schools, and community members created a vision and a long-range plan for the technology needs of our community.  The committee was formed, entitled C.R.E.A.T.E. – the Committee to Review, Evaluate, and Aid Technology in Education.  Batesville Intermediate School currently has three Mac labs, video conferencing equipment, Promethean Boards with projectors, numerous digital cameras, and laptop computers for all teaching staff.  Students and staff utilize a variety of software.  Educators receive ongoing training in technology and its applications.  A technology assistant is also housed in our lab to provide on-going technical support.  Each classroom has a mounted monitor and a VCR for classroom use.

Batesville Intermediate School, along with the Batesville Community School Corporation, has made a commitment to continuous improvement.  The corporation is using the Malcolm Baldrige Educational Framework to serve as a systems check of our overall performance.  The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award is a partnership between the private sector and all levels of government.  Our interest lays in the nationally recognized program that Baldrige outlines as criteria for business, education and health organizations.  The Baldrige criteria is a system that we believe directs us from a teaching system to a classroom learning system where student performance is result oriented and data driven.

Students at Batesville Intermediate School have the opportunity to participate in Fifth Grade Band, Grade 4 & 5 Chorale.

The staff of Batesville Intermediate School creates a team atmosphere that is dedicated to serving student needs and provides a quality educational experience in a safe, learning centered system.
