Challenge One:

After reading chapter one, students will visit the Internet sites listed below that will give them background information on Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, which is the setting for the story. After reading this information, they will visit a web site of the alternative biome assigned to their group. The biomes we will study are tundra, taiga, deciduous forest, grassland, tropical rain forest and desert. After visiting all the sites, students will complete a Venn diagram using Inspiration that compares and contrast the geography around Saskatoon to that of a city in their new biome.

After reading chapter three, students will compare and contrast the diet, physical characteristics and habitat of the Great Horned Owls in the story to another kind of owl assigned to their group. Students will use the sites listed below to find research about owls. After gathering the information, students will complete a chart that compares and contrast characteristics of the two owls. Students will create a poster about their owl which includes this chart and photo of the owls.

Challenge Three:

After reading chapter eleven, students will "Meet the Author." They will visit two author sites and take notes on his life. They will then be asked to make a list of things from Farley Mowat's life that appear in the book, Owls in the Family. Answer these questions: How would this story be different if he had grown up in a different biome? What animals would the main character have found and "adopted" as pets from this new biome? There were several reports of bad weather in the original story. What kind of bad weather would have happened in this new biome? Take one incident from the story and write it using different animals that live in the new biome assigned to you.
