Student Activities at St. Louis Catholic School

Academic Team - The Academic Team is a group of 7th and 8th grade SLS students dedicated to learning fun and interesting facts and applying them in several competitions varying from a computer-based question and answer format to a live competition at LaSalle High School in Cincinnati, OH.

Band - We have two different levels of band at SLS. The beginning band meets Monday and Thursday mornings. The advanced band meets Tuesday mornings. All band rehearsals are 7:30-7:50 am. The SLS band performs in two concerts a year: one in December, and one in May.

Brain Team - The Brain Team is a group of 5th and 6th grade SLS students similar to the Academic Team who compete against local Deanery Schools.

Choir - Choir meets Wednesday and Friday mornings from 7:30-7:50 am. Any student in grades 5-8 is welcome to join. Most students choose to sing with the choir at school masses. The choir performs in two concerts a year. In the past, the choir has performed at the Celebrating Catholic School Values Dinner put on by the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, the Morris Live Nativity, First Communion Masses, and singing the National Anthem at the Lawrenceburg Speedway.

French Club - Meets on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. Learn a little bit about the French way of life, the country of France, and begin to learn the French language.

Jr. High Youth Ministry - For students in grades 6, 7 and 8. Meets on the 1st and 3rd Friday’s of every month from 3:30 to 4:30 during the school year. Meetings consist of good and lively talks, faith sharing, group games, and monthly service projects.

Spanish Club - Meets the 1st Tuesday of the month. Enables students to speak Spanish and explore the culture of the Spanish-speaking world.

Speech Team - Ten students from participating Catholic Schools in the Batesville Deanery compete. Three students perform a serious speech, 3 students perform a humorous speech and 4 students pair up to perform a duet. This is consistent with all the schools. Tryouts for 5th or 6th grade students are early September with practices twice a week until competition in November. The competition is held at Oldenburg Academy. Students earn blue, red and white ribbons based on performing their speech for 2 different judges. One (or 2 for duets) overall student in each category will bring a trophy for outstanding speech. Team totals are added up and the school team with the highest total points takes home the Team Trophy.

Student Council - Student council is open to students in grades 6-8. Members are responsible for the following activities and fundraisers at St. Louis School:

  1. Assist with  activities during Red Ribbon week

  2. Handle the St. Louis Post Office as a fundraiser prior to Christmas break, delivering mail, packages and singing telegrams

  3. Assist during Catholic Schools Week, and often help plan family time with our school families.

  4. Members assist with food drives to the Batesville Food Pantry

  5. Responsible for the SLS garden

  6. Hosts two dances  a year for the Jr. High Students

Yearbook - The Yearbook Committee is an after school club comprised of any 6th, 7th, and 8th graders that choose to contribute their time and eye for design to create the yearbook. We use an online program through School Annual, learning how to include photos, decorative text, captions, and clip art to create a balanced page. We meet to do this biweekly from November through March, sometimes more often closer to the deadline.

Young Hoosier Reading Incentive Program - The purpose of which is to stimulate recreational reading among elementary and middle school/junior high school students. Student participation in pleasure reading was the thrust behind the creation of Young Hoosier Book Award (YHBA) Program in 1974-1975.  The program runs from the beginning of school until May 2nd. Students in grades 4-8 who reach their goal of reading 10 or more books during the school year and passed the corresponding comprehensive tests are treated to a Young Hoosier Party. Students reading 15 books receive a special prize to be determined and a student who reads all 20 books in his/her category receive a trophy along with the other items.
