Welcome to 5th Grade!

Welcome to Mrs. Turchyn’s Class!

My name is Mrs. Emily Turchyn, and I am currently in my eleventh year of teaching fifth graders at BIS!  I lived in Batesville for 26 years, but we now live in a house on a lake! Previously I taught third, fifth, sixth, and first graders, as well as serving as the Primary School's librarian (in that order).

My family consists of seven people and one beagle. (I’ve added a another new daughter-in-law this summer!)  Mr. Turchyn teaches sixth grade at BMS and is also the BHS Cross Country coach. You have probably seen him running around Batesville! Our oldest son, Stephen, is off on his own. After graduating from I.U. (go Hoosiers!) in telecommunications, he works not far away in Indianapolis.  He just got married this summer to Stefanie who is a high school Spanish teacher. Our next child, Jim, graduated from Valparaiso University in mechanical engineering. His wife, Windy, also graduated from Valpo and is now doing graduate work in chemistry at the University of Illinois. They just moved into a house in Urbana. Our youngest child, Jane, is a senior at Ball State University. She is studying secondary math education and will student teach this year. Finally, we have a very old beagle named Indy!

I love teaching because every year presents wonderful opportunities and challenges! I always say I learn something new each day!
